Hello everyone , just wondering if anyone could help at all. I had an HDD Exception error this morning (which I had a couple of months ago) so im guessing it cant be the HDD again (Seagate Skyhawk 4TB) , I have turned off/on the NVR from the wall and now the HDD Exception has gone but Camera 2 is offline. What would people recommend to try and fix this? Thanks.

**TO ADD** I have unplugged Camera 2 and plugged back into NVR and now everything seems to be working fine , I'll see how it goes before adding an update. Just a bit confused as to why I have had this happen twice within the space of a couple of months but my mate who has exactly same camera/nvr/hdd hasn't had one issue. Thanks

I tagged you in a post several months ago (search 'return of the fans'). That NVR without a fan has a known issue with HDD failure. I'd recommend you take the NVR and HDD back where you got it (YESSS) and see if they'll fix it under warranty (I take it they gave you a new HDD when the first one failed?). You'll may get your NVR back with a fan in it unfortunately, but that has been determined to be the fix and all models now ship with a fan again.

Ah sorry mate I haven't seen it , ill take a look now, ive never noticed no fans in it tbh I just put the HDD in and put the lid on lol, I have my NVR in the boiler cupboard on the landing so it doesn't get ridiculously hot in there so its a bit strange , I know people with theirs in the loft and don't have a bother. But thanks again mate appreciate it

Hi JB ,just a quick question mate , ive had time to take out my NVR today and check it out , obviously comes with no fan as you say , im thinking of fitting one my self to save time having to send mine away and be without cctv for however long etc , do you know what voltage I would need ? im guessing it would be 12v ?

Here is some pics I have just taken ,is it just the 2pin connecter near the capacitor?

To add , when I turned it off and disconnected the cameras etc it was warm . not boiling but warm , I don't know how to check the temperature of the HDD anymore when logging in on virtual host as the layout has changed and it seems like they have taken that section away.

Yes it is that 2 pin connector and the fan you’ve shown should be fine. I see the temperature alongside the HDD SMART information in the Hik Partner Pro app, I’d have to have a look to see if it’s available via the web.

No worries mate, I wish I never updated the NVR as it was better before, I used to check the temperature doing the summer when it was 30 outside and it was never at the maximum operating temp so that's why its weird how it fails when its been cold. Im going to order that fan and just do it myself will be a lot quicker.

Since I posted this thread I just turned off then on and its been fine since , do you think with a fan installed it should be good going forward or would you be a bit wary of the HDD now that this has happened?

Try running the HDD tests from the menu. I'm not sure where they are on your model but in mine (V5 UI) they're in System Maintenance > Device Debugging > SMART Detection (if not in maintenance they will be somewhere under storage management). There's a short and long test, and they will highlight whether the disk has any bad sectors.

Im going to have a look now mate ,I forget what version mine is since I updated it.

Thanks for that mate that is where the info is, im running a short test and it just keeps coming back saying reading operation failed. But everything is still working as normal via hikconnect and recordings of events etc.

Nevrmind I think the HDD is goosed now lol. It was working fine until I ran the bad sector detections , I have tried to re initialise it etc but it's having none of it now so hey ho lol.

I had similar on one a while back. A bad sector was detected but it was working ok; as soon as I tried to initialise it, it wouldn’t and had to be replaced.

I assume the one that just failed was a warranty replacement for the previous one that failed and it’s not cost you anything?

Yeah that’s right mate, I’ll get in contact with Amazon today and see if they will replace it lol. If not Im wondering if it’s worth swapping from a skyhawk to a wd purple? Although I’m guessing the no fan being present is almost certainly the issue not the HDD.

If they'll replace it?... They have to. Don't accept any of that 'your return window has closed bollocks'. Once you've had your item a month Amazon do that, but it doesn't affect your statutory rights. Just go to the help/contact section, get the option for them to phone you and insist they replace it - simple. Keep in mind that the price of disks has rocketed so if they refund you it will not cover the cost of a replacement - tell them you want it replacing.

There's no reason why. There's no issue with Seagate Skyhawk/Surveillance.

That's the unknown...Someone at Dynamic said that they'd had 'loads' of disk failures on the K1(D) models and the result was the fans being retrofitted before delivery. I've got a number of them fitted without major issues; I also have the some of the previous models fitted where the fan has been disconnected without issue. Another user on here mentioned that it's not simply a heat issue but potentially stagnant air.

Yeah it's only because they replaced it back in August so wondered if they would be a bit funny about it lol. And I noticed the price as jumped up , I think I paid around £80 and they are now at £130.

Im going to speak with them now and get one of them Noctua fans ordered , going to look at some sort of cool mat aswell may help a bit. It is placed in the boiler cupboard but on a open shelf with the cables coming from the loft into the NVR, It doesnt really get that hot in there so that's why I never thought it would be a issue putting it in there , I specifically avoided putting in the loft due to the heat during the summer and now I have this haha.

The 40 degrees your earlier photo shows is at the upper end of what I see but not extreme. I've just checked a few of mine out of interest. The lowest are those in a loft (lowest 12 degrees, highest (my own) 18 degrees). The hottest is in a boiler cupboard - 45 degrees (those disks have been in for 8.5 years)

When I was checking the temps during the summer it wasn't much hotter than 40 , maybe 45 or so but never seen it up into the 50s or anything , and it was always within the manufactures operating temperature, I think each drive lasted around 4 months , I have 4 cameras running but have 3 on 24/7 record due to issues a few months back with car being stolen , so I don't know if that would make a difference changing the recording to event only

I don't have any NVR installed that isn't 24/7 recording. The only time I use event only recording is when I fit a camera standalone with just an SD card fitted.

Ah right I must just be unlucky then lol , ive seen people say about swapping the cables as that could be an issue , when I got a replacement amazon only sent the HDD no new cables etc so ill try that also aswell as installing a fan
